WHERE WE CAME FROM?

Rev’d Dr. Morton Brown (Minister from 1843-1879)
Highbury Congregational Church was founded in 1827 as part of a movement to open churches in the new towns that were springing up all over the country.
Among those who had that vision were some from Highbury Congregational College in Islington in North London. The site of that college later became home to Arsenal’s Highbury Stadium – so they got their name from us, not the other way round! Our longest serving minister was Andrew Morton Brown – he and his wife had a passion for social reform and for education and played a significant part in reforming the ills of early Victorian Cheltenham.

Opened on 8th June 1852
The present building was erected and opened in 1932 and this marble memorial was placed in what is named ‘The Morton Brown Room’.
Highbury has always had a big commitment to children and young people, running its own school when there was no universal provision for education in the town. It hosted the first Scout Group in Cheltenham shortly after the Scouting movement began and has been home to Guides and Brownies almost since their beginnings too.
Highbury is committed to people of all ages. Our aim is to build a sense of being connected in friendship, faith, and mission with Christ at the centre and open to all.
